RE9 Courtyard Walkthrough: Full Guide with Collectibles
Need a complete RE9 Courtyard walkthrough? The Rhodes Hill Courtyard is the fourth area in Resident Evil 9: Requiem, a large outdoor zone connecting the Care Center basement exit to the Water Treatment Plant. This Courtyard guide covers every collectible, item pickup, and encounter as Grace and Leon navigate the overgrown grounds of Rhodes Hill. Follow this RE9 Courtyard walkthrough to ensure 100% completion before moving on.

What Is the Rhodes Hill Courtyard?
The Rhodes Hill Courtyard is an expansive outdoor area surrounding the Care Center facility. After ascending from the Care Center Basement, Grace and Leon emerge into the courtyard and must find a path to the Water Treatment Plant on the far side of the property. The courtyard is divided into four sections: the central garden, the maintenance shed, the chapel ruins, and the perimeter trail.
Unlike the claustrophobic basement, the courtyard offers open sightlines and multiple pathways. Leon handles most of the combat in this area with his third-person action gameplay, while Grace focuses on exploration and puzzle-solving in the chapel ruins. The RE9 Courtyard walkthrough below covers both characters' sections.
💡Ammo Conservation
The courtyard has more enemies than previous outdoor areas, but also more ammunition pickups. Search every corner before engaging in combat. The maintenance shed alone contains enough shotgun shells to handle most encounters. Refer to our beginner tips guide for inventory management strategies.
How to Complete the Rhodes Hill Courtyard
Follow this RE9 Courtyard walkthrough to collect all items and progress to the Water Treatment Plant.
Step 1: Central Garden (Leon)
Leon takes the lead through the central garden. The garden is a circular area with a dry fountain at its center, surrounded by overgrown hedgerows that block sightlines. Three infected wander the paths between hedges.
Clear the enemies first, then search the area thoroughly:
| Location | Item | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fountain basin | Antique Coin #5 | Inside the dry fountain bowl |
| East hedge alcove | Shotgun Shells (x6) | Behind topiary |
| West bench | Green Herb + Red Herb | Under bench seat |
| North gate post | File: Groundskeeper's Log | Pinned to gate post |
| Garden shed (small) | Handgun Ammo (x10) | On workbench inside |
The Antique Coin #5 is sitting inside the dry fountain bowl at the center of the garden. It blends with the stone, so look carefully. For all Antique Coin locations, see our Antique Coins collectibles guide.
Step 2: Maintenance Shed (Leon)
The maintenance shed is a standalone building on the east side of the courtyard. Leon needs the Shed Padlock Key to enter, which is found on the body of a fallen groundskeeper near the east hedge in the central garden.
Inside the maintenance shed you will find substantial supplies:
- Shotgun Shells (x8) on the metal shelving unit
- Explosive Rounds (x2) in a locked cabinet (shoot the lock to open)
- Weapon Part: Extended Shotgun Magazine on the workbench
- Green Herb near the door
The Extended Shotgun Magazine is a significant upgrade for Leon. It increases his shotgun capacity from 4 to 6 rounds, reducing reload frequency during boss encounters. Equip it immediately.
⚠️Trap Alert
The maintenance shed has a tripwire across the interior doorway. Crouch under it or shoot the wire from a distance. Triggering it detonates a pipe bomb that deals heavy damage and attracts nearby enemies to the shed.
Step 3: Chapel Ruins Puzzle (Grace)
Control shifts to Grace for the chapel ruins section. The chapel is a partially collapsed stone building on the north side of the courtyard. Inside, Grace must solve a stained-glass alignment puzzle to unlock the passage to the perimeter trail.
The puzzle involves rotating three stained-glass panels to form a complete image. Each panel rotates in 90-degree increments. The correct orientations from left to right are: Panel 1 at 270 degrees, Panel 2 at 0 degrees, Panel 3 at 180 degrees.
Before leaving the chapel, check behind the altar for Mr. Raccoon #7 tucked against the wall. Also grab the File: Father Morrison's Confession from the lectern, which provides backstory on the Rhodes Hill infection.
Step 4: Perimeter Trail to Water Treatment Plant (Leon and Grace)
The perimeter trail is a linear path along the courtyard's northern fence. Both characters travel together through this section. The trail features two combat encounters: a group of four infected near a collapsed section of fence, and a single armored infected blocking the gate to the Water Treatment Plant.
The armored infected is the first of this enemy type you encounter. Its front is shielded by metal plating, making frontal attacks ineffective. Circle behind it and target the exposed back, or use Leon's explosive rounds for a quick kill.
At the trail's end, Leon forces open the gate to the Water Treatment Plant, and a cutscene transitions to the next area.
Courtyard Collectibles Summary
The Rhodes Hill Courtyard contains collectibles that cannot be retrieved later. Confirm you have the following before passing through the gate:
- Antique Coin #5 in the central garden fountain
- Mr. Raccoon #7 behind the chapel altar
- File: Groundskeeper's Log on the north gate post
- File: Father Morrison's Confession on the chapel lectern
📝No Backtracking
Once you pass through the perimeter gate, Rhodes Hill is sealed off for the remainder of the playthrough. This applies to the entire Care Center, basement, and courtyard. Verify your collectibles checklist before moving forward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the shed padlock key?
The Shed Padlock Key is on the body of a fallen groundskeeper near the east hedge in the central garden. The body is partially hidden by overgrown vegetation.
How do I solve the chapel stained-glass puzzle?
Rotate the three panels to these positions from left to right: 270 degrees, 0 degrees (default), and 180 degrees. The completed image shows a saint with a lantern above a kneeling figure.
How do I beat the armored infected on the perimeter trail?
Circle behind it and shoot the exposed flesh on its back. The metal plating on its front absorbs all damage. Alternatively, use Leon's explosive rounds for an instant kill.
Can I return to the courtyard after leaving?
No. The perimeter gate locks behind you permanently. The entire Rhodes Hill area, including the Care Center and basement, becomes inaccessible until New Game Plus.
