RE9 RPD & Orphanage Walkthrough: Leon & Grace Guide
This RE9 RPD walkthrough covers the full Raccoon City Police Department and Orphanage sections in Resident Evil 9: Requiem. Chapter 6 splits Grace and Leon into separate locations for the first time. Leon explores the iconic RPD building while Grace navigates the nearby Orphanage. This RE9 RPD & Orphanage guide walks you through both paths, all item locations, and the first Mr. X encounter that makes this chapter one of the most intense in the game.

What Is the RPD & Orphanage Chapter?
After arriving in Raccoon City through the storm drains in the Water Treatment Plant, Grace and Leon split up to cover more ground. Leon heads to the Raccoon City Police Department seeking communication equipment, while Grace goes to the Orphanage following leads about the infection's origin. This chapter features the longest separation of the two playable characters.
The RPD is a fan-favorite location returning from Resident Evil 2, now significantly damaged and overrun by new threats. The Orphanage is an entirely new location unique to RE9. Both areas are rich with puzzles, collectibles, and high-tension encounters. The difficulty ramps up considerably in this chapter.
⚠️Difficulty Spike
Chapter 6 marks a significant increase in enemy density and puzzle complexity. Ensure both characters are well-stocked before the split. Leon should prioritize shotgun ammo, and Grace needs handgun rounds. Check our beginner tips guide for advanced resource management tactics.
Leon's Path: Raccoon City Police Department
Leon's section of this RE9 RPD walkthrough takes place entirely within the police station. Veterans of RE2 will recognize the layout, but structural damage and new barricades create different routes through familiar spaces.
Step 1: RPD Main Hall
Leon enters through the front doors into the iconic RPD main hall. The goddess statue at the center is shattered, and debris blocks the second-floor balcony access. Search the ground floor before heading deeper:
| Location | Item | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reception desk | RPD Map | Updates map overlay for entire building |
| Behind goddess statue | Handgun Ammo (x15) | On the floor |
| West office entrance | Green Herb | On filing cabinet |
| Under staircase | Mr. Raccoon #12 | Sitting on a box, partially obscured |
| Display case | File: Officer's Last Report | Describes RPD evacuation |
Mr. Raccoon #12 sits on a cardboard box beneath the main staircase, partially hidden by a fallen bookshelf. It is the most commonly missed collectible in Raccoon City. See the full Mr. Raccoon locations guide.
Step 2: West Office and Records Room
The west office is accessible from the main hall. Five infected occupy this room. Leon's shotgun and parry combo is effective here due to the tight quarters. After clearing the room, search every desk for scattered ammunition and a Red Herb in the break area.
The records room adjoins the west office. Inside you will find the Club Key in the filing cabinet and File: Infection Timeline pinned to the evidence board. The Club Key opens several doors throughout the RPD.
Step 3: East Wing and Medallion Puzzle
Using the Club Key, Leon accesses the east wing. The east wing contains the RPD's classic medallion puzzle, updated for RE9. Three medallions must be placed in the correct pedestals to unlock the underground passage.
Step 4: Mr. X / Super Tyrant First Encounter
After placing the first medallion, a cutscene introduces Mr. X (Super Tyrant), who crashes through the RPD ceiling. From this point forward, Mr. X stalks Leon throughout the building. He cannot be killed and must be avoided.
💡Mr. X Patrol Patterns
Mr. X follows a semi-random patrol route but is attracted to gunfire. Avoid shooting unless absolutely necessary. Use the knife for lone infected to stay quiet. Mr. X cannot enter save rooms, so use them as safe havens when he gets too close. For advanced avoidance strategies, see our Super Tyrant boss guide.
Grace's Path: The Orphanage
Grace's section runs parallel to Leon's RPD exploration. The Orphanage is a three-story building with a connected underground laboratory.
Step 5: Orphanage First Floor (Grace)
Grace enters the Orphanage through a side window. The first floor contains the main hall, a dining room, and a dormitory wing. The atmosphere is dense with environmental storytelling about the children who lived here.
Key items on the first floor:
- Orphanage Map on the reception desk
- Handgun Ammo (x10) in the dining room kitchen drawer
- File: Sister Agnes's Journal on the dormitory nightstand, critical lore document
- Antique Coin #9 inside the donation box near the entrance (interact to open)
- Green Herb + Red Herb in the bathroom medicine cabinet
Step 6: Second Floor and Shadow Puzzle (Grace)
The second floor classrooms contain a unique shadow puzzle. A lamp in the central hallway casts shadows from objects placed on a rotating table. Grace must position three objects so their combined shadow forms the shape of a key on the wall.
The solution: place the Cross at position 1, the Book at position 3, and the Candle at position 2. Rotate the table to the 120-degree mark. The shadow key aligns with a hidden mechanism that opens a panel revealing the Laboratory Access Card.
Step 7: Underground Laboratory (Grace)
The Laboratory Access Card opens a hidden elevator behind the chapel on the first floor. The underground lab connects the Orphanage to the broader Raccoon City tunnel network. Grace discovers research notes explaining the link between the Orphanage and the ARK project.
Search the laboratory thoroughly for the Weapon Part: Suppressor on the main workbench. This attachment is essential for Grace's stealth gameplay in later chapters, reducing the noise signature of her handgun significantly.
📝Reunion Ahead
After completing the underground laboratory, Grace exits through a tunnel that connects to the RPD underground passage. A cutscene reunites Grace and Leon, and they proceed together into the broader Raccoon City exploration.
RPD & Orphanage Collectibles
Both locations contain items exclusive to this chapter. Verify your checklist before triggering the reunion cutscene:
- Mr. Raccoon #12 under the RPD main staircase
- Mr. Raccoon #13 in the Orphanage dormitory closet (second shelf)
- Antique Coin #9 in the Orphanage donation box
- Antique Coin #10 in the RPD S.T.A.R.S. office desk drawer
- Files: Officer's Last Report, Infection Timeline, Sister Agnes's Journal
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch between Leon and Grace during this chapter?
No. The game controls which character you play during each section. Leon's RPD path and Grace's Orphanage path are presented in alternating segments. You cannot freely switch between them.
How do I avoid Mr. X in the RPD?
Mr. X follows gunfire sounds and patrols semi-randomly. Avoid shooting when possible, use the knife for lone enemies, and duck into save rooms when he approaches. He cannot enter rooms with typewriters. See our Super Tyrant guide for detailed strategies.
What is the S.T.A.R.S. office locker code?
The code is 2236. Find it on a sticky note inside the refrigerator in the west office break room.
Where is the suppressor weapon part?
The Suppressor is on the main workbench in the Orphanage underground laboratory. You need the Laboratory Access Card from the shadow puzzle on the second floor to access it.
